Volvo will expand EX30 production to Ghent, Belgium, in 2025 from where it will supply the US.
Volvo Cars will delay the US launch of its EX30 electric crossover by more than a year due to recently increased US tariffs on China-made vehicles.
In a statement on 26 June 2024, Volvo blamed the delay on "changes in the global automotive landscape."
The Biden administration, aiming to prevent Chinese EVs from flooding the US market, has boosted import tariffs to 102.5% this year from 27.5%.
The EX30 is currently built in Zhangjiakou, China. Volvo will expand production to a factory in Ghent, Belgium, that will supply the US and Europe.
EX30 production is expected to begin in Ghent in September 2025, according to AutoForecast Solutions.
Key model
The EX30 small crossover is the most affordable, fastest accelerating and greenest Volvo yet.
The EX30 sits atop Geely Group's Sustainable Experience Architecture platform. The design allows for a smaller, less expensive battery without compromising driving range. The crossover's low hood and a roof drop in the rear reduce drag and boost energy efficiency.
The EX30 is aimed at the millennial and Gen Z market for EVs, which premium automakers have mostly ignored. Tesla and Mercedes have compact electric crossovers, but they are larger and pricier.
The 2025 Volvo EX30 was priced from $36,145 in the US including shipping. It's unclear if that pricing will change with European production.
