The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is not a visa but a digital ”permission to travel” for visits to the UK. Travelers must apply for this permission before their trip. According to the UK Home Office, the rollout began last year initially covering visitors from the USA, Canada, and Australia. Now, the final phase includes visitors from European countries.

The UK Home Office states that the ETA aims to enhance the security of the immigration system and safeguard the country by screening individuals before they arrive in the UK. Additionally, it is intended to facilitate quicker and safer border crossings.

Seema Malhotra, Minister for Migration and Citizenship, stated:

"Securing our borders is a foundation of the UK government’s Plan for Change, and by digitising the immigration system, we are paving the way for a contactless UK border, ensuring visitors enjoy a seamless travel experience in the future."

What does this mean for drivers in the FVL industry?

Essentially, the same requirements apply as for all other visitors, but it is important to emphasise the need to apply for an ETA when planning transport to the UK.

The application process is designed to be quick and straightforward using the UK ETA app, with many applicants receiving a response within minutes. This should still allow for spontaneous trips to the UK. The ETA can also be obtained through GOV.UK. However, authorities recommend submitting the application at least three working days before the planned trip to allow for potential additional review.

There are grounds for refusal, including:

  • A conviction for a criminal offence in the UK or abroad resulting in a custodial sentence of 12 months or more.

  • If the applicant’s presence in the UK is deemed not conducive to the public good due to their conduct, character, associations, or other factors.

To apply for an ETA, applicants must answer questions regarding their suitability and criminal history. Once approved, the ETA is digitally linked to their passport. The application costs £10 and grants multiple visits to the UK for up to six months within a two-year period or until the passport expires.

According to the UK Home Office, they have worked closely with major airlines, maritime services, and rail carriers to ensure the smooth implementation of these new digital requirements. In many ways, the ETA system is comparable to the EU’s ETIAS, which has been postponed until next year.
