H1 New Vehicle Exports from China

With tariffs and trade wars the expectation was that volume of new vehicles leaving China would have reduced. On the contrary, the latest data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) shows that exports of new finished vehicles has actually risen.

H1 exports are up 10.27% year on year with a total 3.07 million vehicles exported from China in the first 6 months of the year. In Q1 exports hit 1.4 million units, marking a 7.33% y/y increase, and in Q2 exports hit 1.6 million units, marking a 12.92%.

Of the total exports in the H1 period, internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles accounted for 65.63% equivalent to 2.02 million units, while new energy vehicles (NEV) which include only battery electric vehicles (EV) and plug in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) accounted for 34.36% or 1.06 million units.

Exports of NEVs from China have risen significantly in the H1 period up 48.51% y/y the CAAM data shows. Of this, battery EVs accounted for 670,000 units, up 40% y/y while PHEVs accounted for 390,000 units up 210% y/y!

Passenger cars continue to dominate the exports of new vehicles from China, with 2.57 million units exported in H1, accounting for 83.72% of the total exports. Commercial Vehicle exports hit 501,000 units in the 6 months, just 16.7% of the total exports.

The top 10 OEMs exporting from China in the H1 period are led by Chery with 548,000 units exported. BYD followed with 472,000 units, SAIC next with 438,000 units. Tesla, meanwhile, has exported 101,000 units from China in the H1 period.
