The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the new standard ISO 14083 titled "Greenhouse gases — Quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions arising from transport chain operations". ECG welcomes the publication of this standard after almost 4 years of development. In 2023 February, ECG started a cross-industry project with VDA and other European Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to create a standard for emissions reporting and calculation of emissions from automotive supply chains which will align with this standard.
ISO 14083 provides guidelines for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions from transportation activities across the supply chain including road, rail, air, and sea transport. It builds upon other standardisation efforts in this area such as the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) Framework developed by the Smart Freight Centre.
The cross-industry project started by ECG on standardising emissions reporting and calculation will make a step forward and look at automotive supply chains emissions specifically covering both inbound and outbound logistics. The project will build upon internationally acknowledged efforts of standardisation in this area including ISO 14084. The main objective is to fill in the gaps for emissions reporting and calculation in the automotive sector. It is bringing together players in the automotive industry such as logistics service providers (LSPs), other OEMs and parts suppliers.
This sector specific guideline for the automotive sector will allow all players to have a common methodology. Standardisation is key for carbon accounting and decarbonisation in finished vehicle logistics. The result of the project is expected to be published in Q3 2023.
