ECG has published a new manual dedicated to the safe handling of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in maritime transport. The document was prepared by a subgroup of the Quality Working Group, which brought together expertise from all shipping line members. The manual’s goal is to consolidate good practices developed individually by carriers into a single, practical reference for the members.

The manual responds to safety concerns linked to Alternative Fuel Vehicles, including BEVs. It reflects the need for clearer guidance in light of the increasing market share of electric vehicles in Europe, while ECG and the drafting group recognise that internationally accepted guidelines will prevail as soon as they are issued. The document makes references to the information included in the EMSA Guidance on Alternative Fuel Vehicles.

As technology, scientific knowledge and international regulations continue to evolve, ECG will update its documentation, ensuring that its members remain aligned with the latest safety requirements and industry practices.
