News from Brussels
A delegation of Committee on Transport and Tourism, led by its chair Karima Delli, will visit Genoa and Florence (Italy) on 2023 April 3-5, to take stock of trans-European projects development.
Ten members strong delegation will focus first two days of their visit in Italy on Genoa and its main infrastructure challenges, including the redesigning of the city’s logistics, deploying major infrastructure projects in order to do away with bottlenecks and boost Genoa’s position as an international gateway. They will meet local authorities and visit Terzo Valico dei Giovi project site. MEPs will also visit the port of Genoa, a main European gateway in the Mediterranean Sea located at the end of the Rhine-Alpine trans-European transport network corridor, which connects key North Sea ports of Belgium and the Netherlands with the Mediterranean port of Genoa.
The last day of the mission will focus on Florence, visiting its major airport and Hitachi Rail plant, a global brand producing innovative high-speed trains.
Ahead of the visit Ms Karima Delli (Greens, FR) said: “Notwithstanding the significant delays in its completion, TEN-T makes a vital contribution to achieving the EU’s political goal from an economic, social and environmental point of view. To have the possibility to visit a strategic hub of the intermodal mobility, its port and the works of the Terzo Valico, makes the visit to Genoa an unique opportunity for our Committee to gain a first-hand knowledge on the challenges of a more efficient and sustainable mobility. The visit to the Hitachi rail plant and the Florence airport will provide example of technological investments that are necessary for the decarbonisation of transport.”
Ms Delli will be joined by nine MEPs: Mr Marian Jean Marinescu (EPP, RO), Mr Massimiliano Salini (EPP, IT), Ms Josianne Cutajar (S&D, MT), Mr José Ramón Bauzá Díaz (Renew, ES), Mr Bergur Løkke Rasmussen (Renew, DK), Mr Nicola Danti (Renew, IT), Mr Marco Campomenosi (ID, IT), Mr Roberts Zile (ECR, LV) and Mr Carlo Fidanza (ECR, IT).
During the visit on Tuesday (2023 April 4) MEPs will hold a press conference at 13.00 at the Port of Genoa (Palazzo San Giorgio Via della Mercanzia 2, 16124 Genova). For any media questions or registration for a press briefing, you are kindly advised to get in touch with Parliament’s press officers in Italy, Maurizio Molinari (maurizio.molinari@europarl.europa.eu, tel. +39 02 43 44 171).
Background
To support EU‘s economy, provide mobility for people and goods and ensure connectivity of all regions while also limiting negative impacts on climate and environment, the EU has been building a multimodal transport network across its territory: the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). The visit will allow transport MEPs to gather a first-hand experience and contribute to their work on TEN-T rules update.
