News from ECG
The European Commission (EC) published a consultation on the CountEmissions EU initiative. The consultation will be open until 17 October. This initiative aims at setting out a common framework to calculate and report transport-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Both the passenger and freight sector would use this framework. In the view of the EC, transparent information will allow service providers to monitor and reduce their emissions and improve the efficiency of their transport services and will enable users to choose the most sustainable option.
This consultation follows a call for evidence published in December 2021 to which ECG replied (see response here).
ECG supports the initiative. GHG accounting is, amongst others, one of the instruments towards achieving the climate objectives established at EU level. A common EU framework would enable the transport and logistics sector to account for GHG emissions in a coherent, comparable, and meaningful way across sectors.
Standardisation of emissions reporting in finished vehicle logistics is also a strategic priority for ECG. It is in line with the objective of this initiative of the EC. ECG will shortly start a project in co-operation with the automotive industry to define a standard methodology to calculate and report on automotive emissions reporting.
ECG invites all the members to reply to the consultation by 17 October. For more information please Andreea Serbu.
