Norwegian hauliers affected by the closure of the E6 have been granted a temporary exemption from EU driving and rest time rules, after a landslide blocked the key north–south route.

A major landslide hit the E6 near Nesvatnet in Levanger, Trøndelag, on Saturday morning, forcing the road to close in both directions. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration Statens vegvesen has confirmed the closure will last for several days while clearance work is carried out.

The Norwegian Truck Owners’ Association (NLF) applied for an exemption immediately after Saturday’s landslide, arguing that detours made it impossible for drivers to complete deliveries within legal limits. The roads administration approved the request the same evening, describing the situation as “an extraordinary circumstance”.

The exemption is valid from 30 August until 6 September 2025, or until the E6 reopens. The temporary rules allow:

  • Daily driving time up to 10 hours (instead of 9)
  • Weekly driving time up to 60 hours (instead of 56)
  • A total of 100 hours across two consecutive weeks (instead of 90)
  • Up to five reduced daily rest periods between weekly rests (instead of three)

Drivers with smart tachographs must record start and end countries, while those with first-generation digital tachographs must do so manually on printouts.

Temporary customs measures

Swedish Customs has also adopted temporary measures to facilitate cross-border traffic diverted via the E14 through Storlien and road 322/FV72 to Verdal. From 30 August to 3 September, transports must follow this route without deviation, with restrictions on loading, unloading, breaks, and the carriage of restricted goods.

Road closure and diversions

The E6 remains fully closed in both directions while clearance work is carried out. Statens vegvesen has confirmed the closure will last several days.

Traffic is being diverted via county road 755 (fylkesveg 755) for vehicles up to 50 tonnes. The only alternative for heavier traffic is the Swedish route via the E14.

Heavy goods vehicles crossing the border must be cleared by customs, while private travellers carrying restricted goods must also undergo checks.

The Roads Administration initially announced that modular road trains could not use the fv. 755 diversion, but this information was later corrected and removed on 1 September at 14:20.

For updated traffic information, drivers are advised to consult the Roads Administration’s traffic service, while customs regulations can be found on the websites of the Norwegian and Swedish customs authorities.
