Labour Day is a public holiday in many European countries. Hungary and Slovakia have relaxed their restrictions to some extent. According to the Hungarian Ministry of Transport, the traffic ban will be shortened by eight hours and will begin on Thursday, 1 May, at 06:00, rather than on Wednesday at 22:00. Slovakia, as in previous years, has introduced exemptions on both 1 and 8 May.
In addition, the Slovenian Ministry of Infrastructure has decided to exempt heavy goods vehicles engaged in road-sea transhipment in the Koper region from parking on the national holiday falling on 2 May 2025.
In May, several countries will also observe holidays such as Victory Day and Ascension Day. Below is a schedule of holiday-related truck traffic bans across Europe.
30 April (Wednesday)
Croatia – 15:00 to 23:00. The ban applies to heavy goods vehicles and combinations with a GVW over 7.5 tonnes, as well as trucks and vehicles with trailers exceeding 14 metres in length.
France – 22:00 to 00:00. Restrictions apply to trucks and vehicle combinations with a GVW over 7.5 tonnes.
Luxembourg – 21:30 to 00:00 (towards France), and 23:30 to 00:00 (towards Germany). Applies to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes GVW, with or without trailers.
Poland – 18:00 to 22:00. Applies to vehicles over 12 tonnes GVW.
1 May (Thursday, Labour Day)
Austria – 00:00 to 22:00. Restrictions apply to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes GVW.
Croatia – 14:00 to 23:00.
Czech Republic – 13:00 to 22:00. Applies to trucks and combinations with a GVW over 7.5 tonnes.
France – 00:00 to 22:00.
Germany – 00:00 to 22:00. Trucks over 7.5 tonnes GVW and those with trailers are not permitted to drive.
Hungary – 06:00 to 22:00.
Italy – 09:00 to 22:00. Applies to trucks over 7.5 tonnes GVW.
Luxembourg – 00:00 to 21:45.
Poland – 08:00 to 22:00.
Slovakia – 00:00 to 22:00. Restrictions apply to trucks over 7.5 tonnes GVW and those over 3.5 tonnes GVW with a trailer or semi-trailer.
The Slovak Police Presidium has introduced exemptions for heavy goods vehicles on motorways, expressways, and first-class roads, as well as for international traffic entering the country from neighbouring states where the vehicle’s destination (e.g. company headquarters or unloading site) is in Slovakia.
Slovenia – 08:00 to 22:00. Applies to heavy goods vehicles and combinations with a GVW over 7.5 tonnes.
2 May (Friday)
Poland – 18:00 to 22:00.
Slovenia – 08:00 to 22:00. According to a decision of the Slovenian Ministry of Infrastructure, on this day lorries with a permissible total weight of 7.5 tonnes will be able to drive freely on Slovenian roads if they prove with their travel documents that they are going to the port of Koper to load or unload goods transported by sea or that they are returning from the port after loading or unloading.
