Norway’s car registration numbers from August show a total of 9,247 new electric passenger cars registered, accounting for 74.8% of all new passenger car registrations for the month. In terms of models, the VW ID.4 topped the rankings in August with 1,483 new registrations.
Compared to August 2021 (11,811 new registrations), the 9,247 electric cars last month were down by 21.7%. But the share across all drive types rose from 71.9% (August 2021) to 74.8% (August 2022). However, compared to August 2022, numbers are up considerably.
The overall market slumped by 24.7% compared to the same month last year. While 16,427 new passenger cars were registered in August 2021, only 12,363 were registered in August. The picture is similar for the months from January to August. The Norwegian Road Information Authority (OFV) recorded a total of 88,115 new passenger car registrations from January to August 2022, which corresponds to a minus of 20.5% compared to the same period in 2021.
Plug-in hybrids suffered a 46.1% drop in August 2022 compared to the same month last year. Looking at the year to date, it is even a minus of 66.8%. Hybrids (excluding PHEVs) accounted for 955 new registrations in August – an increase of 28%. Considering 2022 as a whole, however, this represents a decline of 34.9%. Even though, as mentioned above, all-electric cars saw a 21.7% drop in new registrations compared to August 2021, they achieved a 2.9% increase from January to August 2022 compared to the same period last year.
Looking at the market share by drive type, the following picture emerges for August: at the top, electric cars were able to pull well ahead of plug-in hybrids (74.8%). Hybrid cars (without PHEV) still had a share of 7.7%. Diesel cars accounted for 3.8 per cent and petrol cars for 2.3 per cent.
As mentioned above, the Volkswagen ID.4 was the leading model in August. The SFO statistics show a total of 1,483 new registrations for the MEB SUV. The Skoda Enyaq had a total of 726 new registrations last month. The Tesla Model 3 was registered 507 times.
The BMW iX came in fourth with 440 new registrations. The VW ID.5 came in at 399 new registrations, ahead of the Hyundai Kona Elektro, which came in at 395 new registrations last month.
