News from Brussels
Recharge City, in Denmark, and mowiz TRUCK Porta de Barcelona, in Spain, were voted European Truck Parking Areas of the Year 2025, respectively, in the category “Large parking areas” (above 50 places) and “Small parking areas” (up to 50 places), whilst mowiz TRUCK Astigarraga, in Spain, was unanimously selected winner of the Green Truck Parking Management Award 2025, by ESPORG’s international jury*, composed of representatives of leading road transport stakeholders and governmental and non-governmental institutions.
The jury commended the outstanding quality of all eleven applications, witnessing the progress made over recent years in the quality of service and care offered to professional drivers by truck parking areas, whilst emphasising the innovation, commitment and adaptability to new challenges and indeed the specific needs of the drivers, both male and female, displayed by the three winners.
Charlotte Ørnsvig, Project Director of Recharge City said: "We are incredibly honored and proud of this recognition. Recharge City is the first of its kind in Denmark and the largest SSTPA with EU Platinum certification in Europe. This acknowledgment affirms our role as pioneers in safe and secure truck parking. It is proof that we have a legitimate place in the industry, where good conditions and high standards for truck drivers are becoming even more important. Furthermore, we hope that this recognition will help raise awareness of Recharge City within the transport industry and establish us as a natural stop for truck drivers driving through Denmark.”
Luis Manuel Calvo, mowiz TRUCK General Manager and representative of mowiz TRUCK Porta de Barcelona said: “Freight transport is the silent engine that drives our economies and connects communities, but currently behind every truck we must not forget that there is a driver: a person with challenges, aspirations and sacrifices that often go unnoticed. In mowiz TRUCK our commitment has been and will continue to be to focus not only on improving logistics processes and increasing security for freight and fleet companies but also on putting actions with people at the centre. From encouraging responsible practices towards drivers, to promoting policies that prioritise their safety, well-being and dignity, we are convinced that caring for those who bear the weight of the road is essential for the progress of the sector, which is a fundamental driver of the economy within the EU”.
Representative of mowiz TRUCK Astigarraga Adela de Olano, Sustainability and ESG Director at EYSA Group, said:“For Grupo EYSA, sustainability is a fundamental commitment. Therefore, in our network of secure truck parking facilities, Mowiz TRUCK, we adopt a comprehensive approach, considering our environmental impact from the design phase to daily operations. We strive to ensure the efficient use of resources, promote alternative energy sources, and encourage reuse and recycling, with the goal of achieving zero-waste facilities.”
The jury also commended the two runners-up, Truck Etape Béziers, in the category “Green Truck Parking Management”, and Le Truck Village/Eurotunnel, in the category “Large parking areas”, who came second in the ranking, for maintaining the exceptionally high quality of service and customer care, and awarded them with the European Excellence in Truck Parking 2024 runner-up certificate.
Certificates of excellence were awarded also to Truck Arena 31 (FR), Calsina y Carré (SP), Truck Park Brescia Est (IT), TWV Secure Park (FR), Andamur (SP), and CRS/CFL Multimodal (LUX).
Jean-Louis Colson, Head of Unit C1, DG MOVE at the European Commission said: “The development of Safe and Secure Parking Areas (SSPAs) has been a priority for the European Commission under the previous and current mandate and it will continue to be the case in the years to come. Driver’s security, safety, wellbeing, reducing cargo theft, and maintaining compliance with regulatory rest requirements are key EU objectives and SSPAs are essential to achieve these objectives. As in previous years, the ESPORG Excellence in Truck Parking Award has allowed to highlight the great importance of SSPAs for drivers and operators and I cannot but congratulate the winners and the nominees for the outstanding quality of service they provide.”
Kosma Zlotowski, Member of the European Parliament, said: ”Lack of safe and quality parkings and rest areas for truck drivers in Europe remain a huge problem for workers and employers. Without the commitment of the Member States and European funding, the situation cannot be improved on a large scale. This is why any parking area that offers a high standard of safety and sanitary facilities deserves special recognition and appreciation. Congratulations to the winners of this year’s edition - RECHARGE CITY and MOWIZ TRUCK Porta de Barcelona and Astigarraga. The confidence that drivers have in you is the best proof that you set the highest standard that others should follow. We need as many positive examples that infrastructure for trucks and drivers can be properly designed and managed as possible.
At today’s Award Ceremony, Michael Nielsen, President of ESPORG, commented: “We are particularly satisfied with the steadily increasing quality of services our members are offering to truck drivers across Europe, and want to congratulate our winners and runners-up, and EUROPEAN EXCELLENCE IN TRUCK PARKING AWARD indeed all our applicants, for their outstanding achievement and quality of services to professional drivers.”
The aim of the ESPORG Excellence in Truck Parking Award is to promote excellence and to help spread good practices in view of improving safety, security, sustainability and indeed quality of services offered by truck parking operators to professional truck drivers across Europe and beyond, and, by doing so, to enhance the attractiveness and appeal of the driver profession to an increasingly diverse and wider public, including young people and women.
