Land transportation
Volvo Trucks is launching a new digital service that automatically limits truck speeds in predefined geographical zones. The “Safety Zones” system is designed to enhance safety in busy urban areas, logistics centres and industrial sites. It also reduces driver stress by eliminating the risk of unintentionally exceeding local speed limits.
The new service uses geofencing technology, which allows transport companies to precisely define areas on a digital map where specific speed limits apply. When a vehicle enters such a zone, the system restricts acceleration and actively brakes the vehicle if it is travelling too fast. The driver is informed of the current speed limit via the instrument display in the cab.
Full control via Volvo Connect
The system is managed through Volvo Connect, Volvo Trucks’ digital services platform. Fleet managers can define zones, set custom speed limits (starting from 20 km/h), assign them to individual vehicles, and monitor events such as zone entries, exits, speed violations, and manual overrides. Up to 300 zones can be active per vehicle.
Safer in cities, depots and school zones
According to Volvo, Safety Zones can be used wherever stricter speed controls are needed – near schools, within ports and transhipment terminals, in logistics centres or in dense urban areas. Automatic speed limitation helps improve traffic safety, reduces the risk of collisions and damage, and contributes to lower operating costs.
Availability and compatibility
Safety Zones is available as a subscription service via Volvo Connect and requires the Volvo Connect Positioning service. It supports Volvo FH, FM and FMX models with Euro 6 engines and electric drivelines (produced after autumn 2022), including the new Volvo FM Low Entry, designed specifically for city traffic.
The system will be available for new trucks from June 2025 and for existing trucks from September 2025.
A step towards zero accidents
The launch of Safety Zones is part of Volvo’s long-term strategy to eliminate accidents involving its trucks. The system not only boosts safety but also makes operations more predictable, especially in areas where strict speed control is essential. Drivers retain the ability to override the limit in emergencies by pushing the accelerator fully (kick-down), but cruise control cannot exceed the zone limit.
