European manufacturers and operators urge EU member states to finalise weights and dimensions revision

ACEA — 2025-07-18

News from Brussels

A swift and meaningful revision of the Weights and Dimension Directive is essential to enable the sector’s transition to climate neutrality while safeguarding its competitiveness.

ACEA, the Common Road Transport Office (BGL, FNTR and NLA) and TLN welcome the Danish EU Presidency’s intention to reach a General Approach on weights and dimension.

The continued delay in adopting the revised Directive is contributing to the slow market uptake of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles. Despite strong commitment to the EU’s climate goals, the sector faces key barriers:

  • Low uptake of zero-emission vehicles across most markets
  • Insufficient charging and refuelling infrastructure for heavy-duty vehicles
  • Higher total cost of ownership for zero-emission trucks and buses

To address this, the signatories urge Member States to swiftly conclude negotiations and:

  1. prioritise a meaningful revision of weight and axle weight limits to reflect the specific characteristics of zero-emission vehicles.
  2. adopt additional measures that further improve efficiency and support the decarbonisation of road transport.

This revision is a crucial step towards a more sustainable, efficient, and competitive European road transport sector.
