The ECG Dinner Debate at the European Parliament on 5 May 2026, brought together stakeholders from across the automotive and logistics sectors that highlighted the urgent need for simpler, clearer and more harmonised EU regulations for heavy-duty transport.
In light of Europe’s ambitious decarbonisation targets and growing pressure on industrial competitiveness, policymakers and industry leaders are increasingly debating how the transition to zero-emission road transport can remain both realistic and economically viable.
The discussion, focused on the challenges of decarbonising road transport while safeguarding Europe’s competitiveness. Speakers underlined that the sector is already investing heavily in greener technologies, but continues to face major obstacles including infrastructure gaps, high costs, fragmented national rules and increasing administrative burdens.
Industry representatives stressed that achieving Europe’s climate ambitions will require close cooperation between policymakers and businesses, as well as a regulatory framework that enables innovation rather than adding further complexity.
The event was hosted by MEP Beatrice Timgren (ECR), member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), and featured contributions from leading representatives of the transport, logistics and automotive sectors inlcuding Alexander Vlaskamp from MAN Truck & Bus SE , Levent Yuksel from Jaguar Land Rover, Jessica Sandström from Volvo Trucks and MEP Niels Flemming Hansen.
