The Czech plant of Toyota will halt production for the month of February amid a parts shortage.

"Due to a shortage of components in the supply chain, we will be forced to halt production temporarily from 31 January 2023," plant spokesperson Tomas Paroubek said on Tuesday 24 January 2023.

Toyota increased output at the plant in Kolin about 60 km east of Prague by 35% to 202,255 cars in 2022.

The factory builds the new Aygo X mini crossover alongside the Yaris small hatchback.

Toyota has invested more than €180m in the expansion of the plant for production on the Toyota New Global Architecture B-platform since it took full ownership of the factory in 2021. Previously it was a joint venture with PSA Group.

The Czech economy relies heavily on the car industry, which has been recovering as it works through supply snags and lends some support to an economy being hit by high inflation.

The Czech Automotive Industry Association reported production rose overall by 10%1.2m vehicles in 2022, with Volkswagen unit Skoda the main manufacturer. Hyundai also has a plant in the country.
