Members Corner

Efficient management and decarbonised activity. The Port Authority of València (PAV) is working towards this dual objective together with the 32 companies that make up the working group of the ECOPORT II project.

Within the framework of this initiative, the companies that form part of the Ecoport II group (promoted by the PAV) have taken stock of the environmental milestones achieved during 2024, objectives that have been formulated voluntarily by the participating companies and which are additional to the Environmental Management System of each one of them.

Specifically, the companies that make up the Ecoport II Environmental Committee formulated a total of eight environmental objectives that could be selected by the companies that wished to do so. In 2024 these objectives were:

1. Increase in the percentage of waste recovered. Selected by seven companies, six of which obtained an increase in their recovered waste with an average of 31%, equivalent to 109,636kg.

2. Decrease in water consumption 1%.  Selected by 14 companies, of which eight managed to reduce their water consumption by approximately 29.5%, equivalent to 2,958.078 litres.

3. Reduction of fuel consumption by 1%.  Selected by 14 companies, achieving savings well above the 1% target, estimated at 26% as an average value for each company, representing a total of 10,290,705 litres.

4. Reduction of electricity consumption by 1%. Selected by 14 companies, of which eight companies obtained a decrease in their electricity consumption with an average for each company of 5%, equivalent to 23,358,814Kw/h.

5. Use of alternative energy sources. Selected by eight companies, of which seven have met the expected target. Of the actions carried out by the companies, the following stand out: installation of solar panels, replacement of vehicles and forklift trucks with electric ones, photovoltaic plant with storage batteries, acquisition of a portable solar lighting tower and LNG tractor unit.

6. Calculation of the Carbon Footprint. Selected by 16 companies, 81% of which achieved this objective.

7. Participation in environmental initiatives. Selected by 18 companies, all of which have actively collaborated.

8. Circular economy identification. Selected by four companies, all of which have achieved this objective. Of particular note is the use of wastewater from the laundry and plastics, the recovery of fuels and reforestation.

The year 2024 has meant a qualitative and quantitative improvement in the state of the environment in the three ports managed by the PAV: Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia.

Commitment to training and awareness-raising

In 2024, the Ecoport II group made a commitment to training and awareness-raising in certified and level 5 companies, both within the framework of Ecoport II and internally by each company. A total of 4,581 man-hours have been used, over the total number of workers that make up all the companies.

In addition, the companies that are part of this initiative have carried out a self-diagnosis of their priority SDGs. Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the ones selected by most of the companies were:
