  • ECG, VDA and other OEMs will develop the first methodology to calculate and report on automotive supply chain emissions
  • The methodology will be based on the upcoming ISO 14083 standard
  • It will be published in Q3 2023

ECG - The Association of European Vehicle Logistics, VDA – the German Association of the Automotive Industry and original equipment manufacturers agree to co-operate in a cross-industry project on emissions. The objective is to create a standard methodology for calculating and reporting on automotive supply chain emissions to publish in Q3 2023.

The standard methodology will harmonise existing greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting methods and fill in the gaps in the automotive sector. It will be based on the upcoming ISO 14083 on quantification and reporting of GHG emissions arising from transport chain operations and will be applicable by companies at global level.

The project is bringing together players in the automotive industry such as logistics service providers (LSPs), other OEMs and parts suppliers. External support to the project will be provided by the International Transfer Center for Logistics (ITCL).

Wolfgang Göbel, ECG President highlighted: “Standardisation is key to allow fair and equitable comparisons on emissions among and between modes of transport. The use of the standard methodology will allow the industry to invest in decarbonisation of freight transport activities.

Dr. Marcus Bollig, VDA Managing Director Products & Value Creation: “The development of a standard methodology for calculating and reporting emissions in the automotive supply chain is an important step towards achieving the climate targets. We are pleased to be able to make a decisive contribution to this process.
