Goran Vesić, Serbia's Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, has announced new tolls for trucks capable of transporting over 12 tons. The tolls will apply to the country's A and B roads in order to fund maintenance repairs and encourage hauliers to use the country's tolled motorways.
According to reports in the Balkan country, during an appearance at the Kopaonik Business Forum, Vesić told attendees that a toll was need to provide funds for maintenance, “There is a problem with the maintenance of Grade A and B roads in Serbia, which are mostly destroyed by trucks that use them to avoid toll collection on the highway. We will introduce the obligation to collect tolls for trucks weighing more than 12 tons on those roads,” the minister was quoted as saying.
Vesić reportedly added that there will be a charge for every extra kilogram that a truck carries beyond the regulation. In addition, a map of routes available to commercial freight vehicles will be published to avoid damage to local roads.
The Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure says that the measure is expected to generate between and €60m and €70m per year.
