Local and regional authorities have set a €100m investment envelope for rail transport in Provence by 2026.

This was the main decision taken at a meeting at the end of last week in Saint André les Alpes between officials from the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur Region, who consulted the various local authorities and authorities concerned, such as the Département des Alpes de Haute-Provence, Provence Alpes Agglomération, Alpes Provence Verdon and the town of Digne les Bains.

The railway in Provence is essential for the day-to-day transport needs of the inhabitants of the urban and peri-urban areas of Nice and the valleys in the middle and upper parts of the region, said Renaud Muselier, President of the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur Region, as quoted by the regional press.

Double the amount for rail transport in Provence

Rail transport in the region will be entitled to a new investment envelope, after the €50m it has received since 2016 and so far.

Investment will now be doubled, allowing the renovation of Puget-Théniers station in Alpes-Maritimes, as well as those of Entrevaux, Annot, Thorame-Haute, Saint André les Alpes and Digne les Bains. For the Alpes de Haute-Provence area, good news is coming for the train to Pignes with the start of work on the Moriez tunnel, which collapsed in 2019. The contract will be awarded in October 2023, and the “first grout” will be poured in February 2024, for traffic to resume in 2025.
