The new railway service has been opened in the north of Italy, connecting two important rail freight hubs: the HHLA PLT terminal in Trieste and Rail Hub Milano Melzo, a terminal of Contship Italia Group. It is not just a service connecting Italian dots; it is designed to facilitate the large volumes to and from Turkey that enter Europe in Trieste.

The intermodal connection will run three times a week during its initial phase, with the plan to increase to daily connections by the end of 2023. The new service is operated as an open rail system, intended for semi-trailers, sea containers and any other equipment.

Better managing Turkey flows

The project was developed in collaboration with Francesco Parisi Casa di Spedizioni and Alpe Adria, who will manage the the operational and commercial liaison with the stakeholders of the Trieste Terminal. Rail traction is entrusted to Oceanogate, a company of Contship Italia group.

I am happy to announce this important news for our Group”, commented Cristiano Pieragnolo, Managing Director of Hannibal. “The new link is strategic as it allows us to offer greater capacity for all traffic from/to Turkey. In fact, over 60 per cent of Turkey’s import/export flows pass through the Trieste Terminal and thanks to this connection we will better integrate maritime and continental flows.
