The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Deltalinqs have welcomed plans by TenneT and Stedin to accelerate the availability of additional electricity capacity in Rotterdam’s Europoort area.
The move will involve installing a temporary 500 MW transformer. The additional capacity could allow companies operating in the port to bring forward expansion and decarbonisation projects, although grid congestion is expected to remain an issue until permanent infrastructure is completed.
The temporary transformer is expected to become operational by the end of 2028 at the earliest, subject to permits and the installation of the required cable connections. A longer-term solution is expected after 2032, when planned grid expansions are scheduled to be completed.
For companies seeking new or expanded grid connections, the earlier availability of capacity could provide greater certainty for investment decisions and energy transition projects.
However, the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Deltalinqs said further measures will be needed to bridge the gap until permanent grid infrastructure is in place.
These include making more efficient use of existing grid capacity, increasing flexibility in electricity consumption and expanding electricity generation within the port area.
The two organisations will continue working with companies, grid operators and government authorities through the Energy & Industry Board HIC and New Energy Taskforce to develop and implement measures to ease congestion.
The temporary transformer demonstrates how cooperation between industry, infrastructure operators and authorities can provide additional capacity ahead of major grid upgrades, while longer-term expansion remains necessary to support the port’s industrial and energy transition.
