Pecovasa Renfe Mercancías, a subsidiary focused on automobile transport, has announced the modification of one hundred double-decker PMA31 wagons. They are characterized by their fixed upper decks, lack the flexibility required to meet current transport demands. As a result, modifications will be made to the lower deck and the ends of the upper deck to enhance their capacity and streamline the loading and unloading processes.

These Iberian gauge wagons are primarily used in various transport routes, including the Renault factory between Venta de Baños and Santander, Asian vehicle imports through the port of Tarragona, and the Stellantis factory in Madrid for its operations with Valencia and other destinations.

Pecovasa Renfe Mercancías aims to complete the transformation of up to one hundred wagons from this series. Efforts are currently directed towards issuing a new tender with updated technical criteria to expedite the modification process, following an unsuccessful previous tender that did not attract suitable proposals.

This project has secured a grant of approximately four million euros from the Next Generation Government Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union.

Pecovasa has 357 car-carrying wagons, of which almost 50% are highly versatile, as they are capable of transporting any type of vehicle without limitations due to height or length.
