Similarly to the rest of the globe, hydrogen cars are currently anything but successful in Japan. Sales of hydrogen cars in the island nation have fallen by 83% in the past two years – to just 422 units in 2023. Meanwhile, sales of battery-electric cars in Japan have more than doubled since 2021 – to 43,991 units in 2023.

Well-known hydrogen cars include the Toyota Mirai and the Hyundai Nexo. They each have a fuel cell and tanks in which gaseous hydrogen is stored at a pressure of 700 bar.
