ECG has been asked by the International Road Transport Union (IRU) to remind all of our members who operate trucks of the following. 

All vehicles performing cross-border operations that are equipped with an analogue tachograph or a digital non-smart tachograph must be retrofitted with a smart tachograph 2 (SMT2) by 31 December 2024, and those equipped with a smart tachograph 1 must be retrofitted by 18 August 2025. Based on discussions in the IRU enforcement group meeting, it seems that the retrofitting process goes very slowly and is seriously behind schedule for a variety of reasons.
 
IRU has already encouraged the sector to proceed with the retrofitting as soon as possible to avoid backlogs before the deadline expiration. The European Commission (DG MOVE) estimate around 200,000 vehicles need retrofitting by the end of 2024 with another 200,000 to be retrofitted by August next year. Obviously, this is a huge logistical challenge but supplies of SMT2 now appear to be sufficient and DG MOVE strongly recommend to schedule the retrofitting when the required biannual tachograph check is due.
