It’s only 1.5 meters, but ECG has worked for 20 years to get acceptance of harmonized loaded length for vehicle transporters in the EU. Today, the majority of EU Member States already allow for a loaded length of at least 20.75m.

Harmonization instantly guarantees increased sustainable transport in the FVL industry and moving away from a patchwork of national legislations for vehicle transporters. Today this is not the case: companies operate in a fragmented market with different national legislations on loaded length for vehicle transporters.

On 10 December, Poland, taking over the Council presidency from Hungary as of the 1 January 2025, introduced its priorities and objectives for the upcoming 6 months.

ECG, the Association of European Vehicle Logistics, is pleased to note that the Weights and Dimensions Directive is on the agenda.

ECG wants a single market for our truck-operating members. The fact that the Polish Presidency will carry on work on the Weights and Dimensions Directive leads to a better possibility of getting a harmonized market which has already been included in the European Commission’s proposal in July 2023”, says Andreea Maria Serbu, Senior Manager External Affairs, ECG.

Frank Schnelle, Executive Director, ECG: “This is one additional important step towards revising the Directive and harmonization, and I can´t emphasize enough the importance for the European finished vehicle logistics sector and especially for the automotive industry.”
