ECG — 2024-04-10

News from ECG

On 5 April ECG presented the main findings of the Health & Safety Working Group (H&S WG) incident reporting activity for 2023.

The report titled ‘Making the industry safer - Reducing accidents in FVL: 2023 incidents & analysis’ gives a comprehensive overview of the most common incidents happening during loading/unloading operations on car transporters along with key recommendations on how to improve drivers’ safety in vehicle logistics.

Andreea Serbu, ECG’s Senior Manager External Affairs, welcomed all attendees and presented the main activities of the H&S WG and its sub-groups (SG). Philippe Nelain, Global Risk Manager at Renault Groupe, leader of the sub-group on incident reporting, followed with an introduction to the incident reporting website and activities of the sub-group. The aim of the website, developed in 2018, is to gather information on severe accidents and near-misses happening during loading and unloading in trucking operations. The data is analysed to share insightful information and contribute to improve drivers’ safety. Thanks to companies who are continuously supporting this activity, ECG has published yearly reports for the period 2019-2022.

What are the highlights for 2023?

The report analysing 2023 incidents includes an overview and breakdown of high-risk incidents such as Slips & Trips, Roll offs, Drive offs, Falls from height and accidents happening during transport and delivery at retailers, as well as key recommendations for the industry. As in the 2019-2022 reporting period, Slip & Trips are the most common category of incidents observed in 2023. Compared to 2021 and 2022 the percentage of Fall from Height incidents increased. Less roll off incidents have been uploaded to the database in 2023. Close to 80% of all incidents reported resulted in some form of injury where most of the incidents are less than serious.

In the report, ECG highlights once more the importance of drivers’ training and adoption of the ECG Guidelines – Safe loading process: a booklet illustrating step-by-step how to safely load and unload vehicles on a car transporter. The key recommendations are based on the safety fundamentals highlighted in the ECG Guidelines to prevent some incidents such as Slips & Trips, Roll offs and Falls from height.
